Subaru Impreza Returns

After a hiatus of over a decade, Subaru has made the surprising decision to rejoin the Australian Rally Championship (ARC). Subaru retired from the competition in 2005 and also went on to leave the World Rally Championship (WRC) is 2008. This decision disappointed many fans of the “Rex” and Subaru have been sorely missed ever since. At the moment, it appears that this is initially for a five round championship and no details about any other racing are available at this time. However, it will be great to see a “Rex” tearing through the countryside again. Those looking for a Subaru Impreza WRX for sale will be looking at a car with modern racing lineage again. Here are all the details that we know so far.

The Subaru Impreza Model

Of course, we have to start with the car and it is a Subaru Impreza WRX STI NR4. Although the regulations are quite loose in the ARC, Subaru has adopted quite a spartan approach. Subaru believe that their vehicles should be capable of being used during the week and raced at the weekend. To this end, they have made no major changes to the WRX STI NR4 for this series of races. In order to maximise the potential of the car, Subaru has employed Les Walkden Rallying in Tasmania to set it up for the driver. This approach may make the competition tougher for Subaru, as all the other cars used in the ARC are heavily modified for rallying.

Enter Molly Taylor

Subaru has named Molly Taylor as their driver for this series. Molly is a 27 year old Australian rally driver. She was recently named as the top ranked female rally driver in the world. Last year in the ARC she became the first female driver to win a stage, she then went on to finish in second place in the championship overall. To date, Molly has only driven front wheel drive rally cars, but it has been revealed, that she is looking forward to making the switch to AWD. Molly’s family have a number of ties to rallying, her mum Coral was a co-driver in the ARC four times and her dad ran a rallying school for many years. Subaru Australia Director Nick Senior said, “It’s fantastic” for the company to have the ability to secure Molly as a driver and Subaru Ambassador”.

A Subaru Rallying Future

Subaru is being very realistic about their chances of winning the ARC. They have been away from rallying for over a decade, and a lot has changed. The WRX STI NR4 is more than capable and in Molly Taylor, Subaru has secured an excellent driver. This feels like it could be the start of something bigger, such as a return to the WRC, but only time will tell. The ARC starts with the Quit Forest Rally in Perth on the 22nd of April.
